Viralminda

Viralminda Nayanar, a devotee from Sengunrur in the Chera country, is remembered in the Periya Puranam for a single, startling act of zeal — directed not against any enemy of the faith, but against a fellow saint and, in the same breath, against Shiva himself.

The affront at Tiruvarur

His devotion fastened above all on the servants of the god: to Viralminda, the assembled devotees ranked even before the deity they served, and any slight to them was intolerable. Tradition relates that at Tiruvarur he watched Sundarar, the great poet-saint, pass the assembly of devotees gathered there and go straight to worship Shiva without first saluting them. Viralminda’s judgement was immediate and unsparing: Sundarar was cast out of the company of the faithful for the slight — and so, he declared, was the god who accepted such worship. Tradition links the aftermath to one of the founding texts of the whole Nayanar canon: Sundarar’s Tiruthondathogai, the hymn in which the poet lists the devotees of Shiva and opens by declaring himself the servant of the servants of them all — the assembly honoured first, the affront repaired.

The principle

Sekkilar’s hagiography treats Viralminda’s audacity as doctrine in action: in Tamil Shaivism the community of devotees is not the god’s retinue but his equal claim on the worshipper’s reverence. That a man could arraign Shiva for bad manners toward his own servants — and be counted a saint for it — is the tradition’s own comment on where its heart lies.
